Northwest Missouri State University Director of Athletics Dr. Andy Peterson has hired Taylor Merrill as head spirit squad coach for the Bearcats.
“I’m excited to announce Taylor Merrill as our first-ever full-time head spirit squad coach,” Peterson said. “Her experience as a Stepper along with her connection to the community and Northwest Missouri State is going to be a big asset for our cheer and dance programs. We have a lot of work to do to build up the support mechanisms for the cheer and dance athletes who come here to support our game day atmospheres as well as compete in their national Varsity competitions, and I’m confident that Taylor will be able to help us do that in a way that will bring continuity and stability to both programs.”
Merrill, a native of Maryville, Mo., gained her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Northwest in 2015, while also performing as a member of the Bearcat Steppers. She also obtained her master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Northwest in 2017. She served as a school counselor and parent educator for the Maryville School District from 2019-2024.
Merrill possesses a strong background in the field as she was Maryville HS’s dance team coach beginning in 2019. She has been a dance instructor and studio manager for A Step Ahead Dance Company since 2014.
“My goal for the Bearcat spirit programs is to build upon the Northwest culture,” Merrill said. “I plan to pour into these athletes, make them feel supported, and make them love Northwest more and more each year. I am confident in my ability to provide support for both teams and to help build up great programs. My husband, Dannen, and I have planted roots in town and plan to raise our family here. I love Maryville and Northwest and the Northwest game day environment. I'm thrilled to be able to give back to the University and programs that helped shape me into the woman I am today.”
Merrill said she plans to utilize a large network of people and resources gained through her collegiate experience, coaching in the Missouri State Dance Team Association and working with Varsity for the past several years.
